Two Poets, one set to music…

Lucinda Williams “World Without Tears”. Poetry put to music. Her father is poet Miller Williams, he wrote a poem for President Clinton’s inauguration.

Miller Williams commented that his daughter’s album “World Without Tears” is the closest thing she has done to writing poetry. I disagree it is poetry. She is simply one of the best, if not the best (I was going to say female) songwriters of this generation. Songwriters period – male or female. The best.

Here’s Lucinda… (and a poem by her father follows)

From Miller Williams…

Have compassion for everyone you meet
even if they don’t want it. What seems conceit,
bad manners, or cyncism is always a sign
of things no ears have heard, no eyes have seen.
You do not know what wars are going on
down there where the spirit meets the bone.

I think that Lucinda has her father’s poem in her heart and mind when she creates her own art. Inside the jacket of her new album “West” she has the quote from her father’s poem “where the spirit meets the bone”.
